eye shadow?

Question:
how come when you shine a flashlight or something bright in your eyes, you continue to see the shadow of the image when you blink?

Answers:
You have photoreceptors (rods and cones) that pick up wavelengths of light. When a bright light is directed at these photoreceptors they become "bleached" and it takes some time for them to full recover. This is why it appears there is a shadow - these photoreceptors are not functioning properly and therefore not picking up the light they normally would.
