I've asked my doctor about this before and he states it bad if you don't know what you're doing you could hurt yourself or sprain a muscle badly. The best thing to do is stretch slowly when ever you feel the need to crack your back or neck.

Yes it is extremely bad for you. I am no doctor but I had a friend lose consciousness, fall, and die from hitting her head on the tub after she cracked her neck like she had done so many times before. I have also heard that the more you crack areas on your body such and knuckles or wrists, the more you need to just to feel the same relaxation. It is better to slowly stretch areas that are tight, letting them slowly gain better blood flow rather than jolting your system
