I've seen many fires started on road sides from butts being thrown out. I've seen a Fire Marshal throw out a butt in August.
Smokers are stupid and inconsiderate. There is an ashtray in your car for a reason. Cracking your window when you smoke and throwing the butt out the window doesn't make you or your car reek any less.

there's no danger to your car by running over them. You're right, if it isn't illegal to throw them out your car window, it should be! it's a nasty, unhealthy habit that should be banned!
