HI..I am a Doc and I have my ENT experience..so I answer your query..Well it depends on the type and the extent of infection..
Incase of mind external ear canal infection , you can swim (but you must be damm sure that there is hidden middle ear infection)..
Also incase of any discharge from ear(which is mostly seen in case of middle /inner ear infection, you ), you must avoid swimming.and If necessary then put tight ear plugs,

and if you are dicy about the type and extent of infection, then better avoid (if can't avoid then put tight ear plugs and wear cap also)..But finally consult your Doc
