How can help my friend quit smoking?

My boyfriend is a smoker trying to quit, but is having difficulty. I fully encourage his attempts, but he is having motivational issues. How can I help motivate him while still being supportive?

Answers:
Aside from being supportive, you can't help him. He has to help himself.

Now that I've said that, why not give him goals that will make achieving freedom from smoking more fun? Give him something, aside from health, to work toward.

For example, after the first week, treat him to dinner. After the second week, take him out to a movie, his choice. After the third. etc.

These types of goals really helped me w hen I was trying to quit.

Take away the matches/lighter

You can't. He has to truly want to quit within his own mind, and then he'll find the motivation within himself. All you can do is be supportive. If you push him, he'll feel pressured and be more likely to fail.

Cut his cigarrettes in half. Show him how much he spends on cigarrettes in a year. Hold out on sex.

I don't know, just some suggestions. He has to want to quit.. if he doesn't want to, he won't. It has to come from within. You could try the sympathy/tears card. ask him to quit for you. Tell him you don't want him to die early and that if he won't quit for himself, then at least do it for you. But it's still his decision.

Nicotine is highly addictive, so acknowledge that even though he may try a number of times, he might fail. Usually the more times somebody tries to quit, the more chance they will be successful in their endeavor. Try to make him get addicted to something more healthier, distract his interests, tell him to set realistic goals, and make it a gradual process. Cold turkey usually never works.

dispose ciggaretts and lighter when ever you see them, or stick some hot chilli sauce on ciggaretts. i did this to my pa and its true~

get any picture of spoilt lungs or gross ones regarding the consequences of smoking. remember, those to take in second hand smoke gets the worse than the one who smokes.

You can help him in your own way by telling him that if he did not stop smoking his life will be early to death and this can be sin because if he did not stop his being addict to cigarettes he would be sick and died because life is the best thing that GOD has given to us, it is a chance to see and feel how great life is and wonder how GOD is good and nice.Tell him that he is lucky to have this chance of being alive with all good things around him.
