One of my thumbnails has a split?

Question:
It started a couple of years ago, as the nail on my left thumb grows out, it splits at about the point where it separates from the thumb. I can trim the nail down to below the split, but it always comes back as the nail grows out. The split is always in the same place. I can see a small 'ridge' on the thumb below where it splits which seems to be a 'weak point' on the nail.

There is no pain, unless I snag it and it splits too much.

This is not a calcium problem. I love cheese and regularly eat yogert and milk.

On a final note, I heard a news report lately that split or discolored nails can indicated serious medical problems (such as kidney issues). However, since it is only one nail, and is so consistent, this seem unlikely.

Answers:
I have the exact same thing on both my thumbnails, and so does my mom. the doc says there's nothing wrong. If you want to grow it out, try supergluing it. It really works.
U might have a fungus.
