Question:
The medical practice I work fo ris asking clinical staff to add dx codes to the medical encounter form ( super bill ) afer the patient has signed for services and left the office , to ensure payment of blood work ordeed by the doctor. Is this legal. I am not a Doctor and do not feel comfortable doing this. Can I report this to anyone?

Answers:
if in doubt contact the state licensing board, they should be able to tell you if it is legal or not.

yOU SHOULD PROBABLY ASK THE STATE MEDICAL BOARD THIS QUESTION.
There is such a thing as "whistle blower" law, that will pay you a portion of the penalties collocted from medical persons fraudulent billing. It's rather serious and a very steep penalty is attached. The person who "blows the whistle" is paid, as many would never do so, fearing retribution and loss of pay. SCREAM LOUD!
I am not sure that this is illegal. All medical bills are paid by diagnosis codes. I see nothing wrong with adding the code to the bill after the tests have been ordered and done..it is a matter of paper work completion. HOWEVER, if additional tests and codes are added AFTER the blood draw then, yes, it is fraud. If you are doing this then you are a part of the fraud. I would make sure that you know what is wrong and what is part of your job and what is legal and ethical.
