The last stress test I had they had me walk on a tread mill, they checked my heart and pulse rates before and after as they increased the speed. I had to walk at a slow pace at first then they built up the speed. It was like I was on a race track..I won't forget it I was huffing and puffing.but it was worth it to check my heart's condition.
It is usually performed in a cardiologist's office or a heart clinic. You are connected to a monitor which keeps track of your heart rate as well as a monitor of your oxygen levels. You then start to walk on a treadmill which speed is increased gradually to a point where you have reached a "stressful" level for your age group and maintained there for a specified period of time (3 to 5 minutes) The readout printed by the heart monitor is read by the doctor who can then determine how healthy your heart is.
From personal experience: All it is, is a treadmill on which you walk at a certain pace for a certain amount of time; with an increase in the speed each time. Depending on your age, they might even set it on an incline (a little one or one that you're comfortable with); the technician takes your vitals at each interval to see what effect it has on your heart. The report is sent to your cardiologist and That's it!! He can tell from the results whether you have heart disease or not. There's absolutely no pain involved, except for maybe the medical bill - LOL:)
