Loud ringing in my right ear... could it be permanent hearing damage?

Question:
I had an ear infection and now my right ear rings real loud and I went to doc and failed hearing test and was told it was permanent damage. I had a second opinion and that doc told me that my ear is clogged and just need someone to wash it out.

Well it has been over a year now and I still have loud ringing in my right ear. Is this something I should be frightened of? I am kind of young and I though hearing loss only happens to old people.

Answers:
I would recommend that you go see an ENT and audiologist. The ENT can assess the medical status of your ear and determine if there is any medical problems like infections. An audiologist can assess the nature and extent of your hearing loss and determine if the ringing that you have in the right ear may be just associated with some hearing loss or if there is something more serious causing the ringing. It is best to go to an ENT practice that has an audiologist on staff so they can work together to give you the best diagnosis and treatment strategy.

I am not sure that your ringing (tinnitus) will go away, but it is prudent to make sure that there are no serious pathologies that are causing this condition.

I hope this helps
