It's a subluxation of the spine. One or more of your vertebrae are out of alignment. The muscles around it adjust to it being the wrong way but it will nonetheless pinch nerves and cause inflamation in the surrounding tissue. You'll need a chiropractor or osteopath to fix it. It's easily done and fairly painless but the longer you leave it the more visits you'll need.
Any type of back pains (Lumbar region) should be taken very seriously. It isn't a good idea of taking advise through yahoo questions, as spine plays a major role for healthy functioning of body. As you mention, it can be anything from minor muscular pull to Slip disc ! The proper X-ray & examination can tell what its exactly the reason. Before reaching the doctor DO take the following precautions:

1) Don't bend forward in any case.
2) Don't pick any heavy weights or perform any exercise.
3) Try to sleep on a hard bed.
4) Stand up straight without bending.
5) Apply a muscular analgesic cream & give hot pack treatment on the affected area. You can administer any pain killer/muscle relaxant.
6) If you are living in a cold country take care of extreme weather change, specially after taking shower.

Further, you should immediately visit a orthopedic (bone specialist) & start the treatment. Prolonged back pains becomes life long problems.
Could be a trapped nerve or strained muscle. The best thing you should do is go and see your doctor he can see exactly where the pain is and by examining your back will be able to say what is causing it and get you the best treatment.
I would consult a chiropractor to see if there is anything they might do.
dont press on it then
see a docter or an osteopath and get it checked for peace of mind and to make sure there is no further damage
