Broken Leg.?
Question:
Answers:
Your orthopedist will probably take occasional x-rays to monitor the healing process. While a fracture typically takes about 8 weeks to "heal".(by heal, we mean that the two ends of the fractures come together and are now joined), the bone forms a "callous" to protect it from injury. Yet, even with this callous, it is important to know that bone continues to change for about a year after injury.it begins to reorganize the "callous" and tries to resume the "normal" trabacular and cortical structure of the origional bone. You may still experience occasional aches and pains during this time, but most likely your orthopedist can examine your x-rays and determine what level of activity you may resume.
its always weaker after it heals
My foot broke last spring during tennis season (it was a small break on one of the bones), and when I got my cast of there was a bump on my foot because the bone grew more. I haven't had a problem with it since then, including soccer which I've played for 6 months since then. Just make sure you don't come back to athletics etc. too soon, that could cause problems.
Your doctor is in the best position to assess the healing of your broken TIBIA when he takes Xrays again after the casting period(at least I think he should). Usually 6 weeks will be OK depending on the kind of fracture. By the way, it is not true that the broken bone is always weaker-for a time after it has healed, it is even stronger than the uninjured bone. Then as time goes by, it returns to its normal strength just like the other bones in your body provided it has healed properly.
