They need to have a swallow eval to make sure they don't aspirate on food. Many people are silent aspirators, so you can't just go by if they choke or not. They can also have restrictions about the consistency of what they can swallow. If they eat or drink something and aspirate they can easily develop pneumonia because the material gets into their lungs.

Yes. Usually, if there are no swallowing problems, oral feeding is preferred. Often times when PEG tube feedings are initiated, they are on only at nite which allows for the recipient to eat in the day time. When a person is finally eating enough to maintain, they lower then stop the PEG fube feedings or TPN.
