I have been coughing so hard it makes me gag, I dry heave a lot and wondered if this is normal?

It's normal. It happens to people a lot when they cough a lot. It kind of triggers your gag reflex.

A dry, hacking cough could indicate bronchitis. Ask the doctor to check if that is the case.
Are you my next door neighbor?? Just kidding. It could be asthma. A friend of mine does the same thing. She claims her coughing and almost choking spells occur when she is really stressed. Are you having a hard time breathing out or taking a breath in? Any upper respiratory infection could cause this. Allergy's can cause this. Talk to you doctor and write down all symptoms you think are related even if really small. If needed, he will order blood tests, etc.
i don't know what the problem is but just as a suggestion you could have inhaled pollen or some dust and its like stuck in your throat.
thats what happened to my mom. she kept coughing for about a year and we went to the doctor and he found out that she had pollen stuck in her throat. they removed it.
