What causes pine trees to die prematurely?

Question:
Two summers ago one of my pine trees in my yard died. A few months ago, I lost another one in another location in my yard. Now it looks as if the one right next to the dead one might be dying too. What is causing this and what can I do to prevent this?

Answers:
If you live in western north america, it is likely the pine beetle. They are killing trees left right and center out there. I don't know if there are any pesticide sprays or anything available for that.

If you don't live there, it may be some other bug, or a lack of nutrients or water. If your soil is too basic, or too well-drained, it may not be an ideal location for large pine trees, so they may be dying when they get to a certain size.
