what is the most important number with high blood pressure, the top number or the bottom?

Question:

Answers:
the bottom number should never get over 90 and the top shoul not get over about 140 for an example mine runs about 155 over about 110 or 120 i have high blood pressure and i have had a stroke @ one time because of it

Other Answers:
BOTH ARE VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT TAKES BOTH NUMBERS TO DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE HIGH OR LOW BLOOD PRESSURE

both if either is too high or low it can cause problems That's like saying what is more important to have, a brain or a heart. Both are important. One is the pressure during a heart beat and the other is the pressure between beats.

both are important but the main one most look at is the bottom. If it's over 90 for a regular period see your Dr.

i believe it is the bottom thats the pressure on your heart and the # on top is the pressure on your veins but i could be wrong it could be visa versa -but thats my bet ok.

Both numbers have a safe range and are equally important.

The top number is the systolic pressure, which is when the blood first begins to flow as pressure is let off the cuff.
In adults, the optimal systolic number is less than 120, normal is less than 130, and 130-139 is a high normal and needs to be watched.

The bottom number is the diastolic pressure, which is when you can no longer hear the blood pulsing as the cuff loosens and blood flows through the vein smoothly once again.
In adults, the optimal diastolic number is less than 80, normal is less than 85, and 85-89 is high normal and should also be watched.

Anything higher than 140/90 is considered elevated or "hypertension".
