Get as low as possible and crawl under it. Though if the smoke had solidified, chances are the air would have done too, so you'd suffocate before that anyway!

(and there's nothing wrong with using 'sat' as the subjunctive participle when the context is an uncertainty... ;) )

I would probably use a pint glass as a digging tool to scoop out ash and then pass that back in the style of "The great escape" film...Then using a bar towel to occasionally wipe my ash filled eyes,i would use bar stools to make the supports for a tunnel system..All ash could be stored in the beer fridges etc..
