Benadryl has an itch stick that you rub on the bites, it seems to help. They turn red and itch because it is your bodys reation to their saliva they inject in you to prevent your blood from clotting while they drink. YUM!!

Becuase a bug just sucked blood out of you and now it is swollen and irritated. If they itch go to a drug store and buy this stuff called... BAND-AID Anti-itch GEL. it can be used for insect bits, poison ivy/oak, sumac. It has an immediate cooling relief and i have used it MANY times and it really works! Hope I helped :)
The redness and itch is your body's allergic reaction to the mosquito's chemical injection used to deaden the discomfort of the sting. Use an anti-itch salve.
