maybe someone clubbed her in the neck without her knowing
it could be an old injury, it could be stress, a pulled muscle , your friend should look into getting the area x-rayed to find out for sure
It could be from the way she is sitting. I use to hunch over a lot and I started getting pains around my neck/shoulder area. Don't go to the doctor. Go see a massage therapist. I did and the pain went away... also I try to sit upright now too which has helped alot.
Sounds like a pinched nerve...
it might be a stinger or a pinched nerve
It might be from "sleeping funny" - not being positioned comfortably on the pillow.
it might be from stress or tension.
This is usually relieved by massage or chiropractic adjustment.
it could be that ur friend is adding to much stress on her shoulders and neck.
It could be that or she has been working her shoulders and leaving her neck in the same spot.
I had the same problem, Torticollis.
could be a pinched nerve, stress, which is usualy the main factor. the way she sits, could also be from an old injury. i would sugest warm baths with epson salt, heating pads, and gentel massage.
well we need for info.........
does the pain radiate down the arm? is it a sharp or dull pain? what does she do for a living? does she have a job that requires repetitive motions (like a factory)? does she exercise regularly? does she carry a heavy purse on that arm? does she carry children on that side of her body? has she ever injured that shoulder before?
if she has been to the doctor, what did the doctor say??
More information is necessary to answer that question. If a doctor is unable to provide you with an answer during palpation or medical history, then further testing may be necessary, such as x-ray or MRI.

Sometimes the answer is simple, such as stress (which can cause muscle tension in the neck/shoulder/back, etc) or it could be related to environmental factors (positioning when at the computer or standing at the sink/counter).

The pain could be coming from her muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves, etc, so it is impossible to say the cause of pain without further information.

good luck
Your friend could have lifted something really heavy a week ago and she could just start to feel the pain cause she added more weight on it
