what causes sodium and potassium levels to rapidly drop ?

i have two people i care for, both at different times have been hospitalized due to low sodium and potassium levels. Both recieved IV fluids. for one person their levels go up and stabalize, the other persons levels drop as soon as the IV is removed? What would cause this? she's been on IV for 6 weeks and nothing is helping?

is something wrong with me?

Answers:
sodium and potassium losses could occur either via the kidneys, the intestines or the sking. Has the person had diarrhoea or been extremely hot and humid conditions recently? That could be one of the causes. Hoemona imbalances realted to the adrenal glands could be another reason causing kidney to secrete excess amounts. Till the cause is determined IV fluids is the best treatment there is.

Do you think we could get law suit because we answering question?

One of the chief ways that potassium is lost is through the kidneys. Since both electrolytes are affected, my guess is some type of kidney pathology.
