Do I have a torn ligament or tendon?


Question:
Been having upper forearm/ lower bicep pain in my right arm. Nothing that I can pinpoint to cause it....just comes and goes. It will usually come after physical activity. The pain comes when I keep my elbow at a 90 degree angle and rotate my wrist 180 degrees.

While I don't mind the pain, I did notice that I can't easily make a bicep muscle anymore on my right arm! I workout, so I have muscle build, but it is FAR easier to flex my bicep muscle in my left arm than it is in my right arm. It's like the muscle won't flex anymore without straining myself.

Is this something I should be concerned about? Is my tendon torn? Pulled? I know I should go to the doctor, but I don't need to hear the usual "take anti-inflammatory meds and take it easy!".

Anyone ever experience a tendon pull or tear?

Does it look like the muscle has collapsed? Like do you have a hole in the arm where your muscle should be when you flex? If so, you have a Popeye muscle (collapsed bicep muscle). This can be repaired or left as it is depending on your self esteem. Go and see an orthopedist and he will know just how to repair this.

Other Answers:
If you tore your biceps muscle it is easiest to reattach the tendon within 10 days of injury.
An Orthopedic Surgeon would do this.
If you call them, tell them what happened and that you know it needs to be looked at very soon.
How do you tell? Usually your arm will look like a popeye muscle on the one side, verses a normal one on the other side.
When you are rotating, that is the main action of the biceps muscles believe it or not, not arm flexion.
Also, Check the sides of your elbow. do those hurt? That could mean tennis elbow, or golfer's elbow.... You can check these by flexing up the wrist, and if that hurts, then you may have your answer.
Best thing to do: If you are worried that you are losing strength, or you have a muscle deformity, call an ortho and get in just in case you need surgery.
If you are not worried, anti-inflammatories are instore for you until you can get in to get examined. You could also try icing it down if it just happened.
Usually coming after physical activity, sounds like tendonitis to me, but I would want to see you in office to be sure.
sounds like severe tennis elbow but, it could be your biceps tendon is inflammed. if you start to get swelling between your shoulder and elbow, get it checked out. try moist heat and aleve for pain. but don't play around if it gets worse.a ruptured biceps tendon usually needs surgery to repair.
It sounds like you have over-strained the joint area. I would lay off of exercising that arm for a while and focus on stretching exercises-very small, light exercises with no weight. Turn your arm to an angle where it hurts and just HOLD until the pain subsides, continue in small movements until discomfort is felt again, then HOLD until the pain subsides. Repeat this process over and over a few times a day. I would lay on my back and do what I call a "clock" stretch. This is making stretches in a full circle with both arms, and when I feel any discomfort or pull, I hold the arm in position until the muscles relax, then I continue in the circle pattern. This helps my rhomboid area of the back.

Try joint supplements like: Glucosamin Chondroitin (if you are diabetic, avoid the glucosamin), MSM, Sam-E, Omega 3 Oils, Hylaronic Acid. Use them for 60-90 days and see if you notice a difference. These supplements need time to be absorbed into the joint tissue, so don't stop at 30/45 days and give up. It requires time and patience. I use these supplements for my knees that I did some tearing at the ACL area, and the pain is very minimal, and sometimes totally clear of pain.

Keep the area flexible, use smooth movements when you use that arm. Avoid lifting or doing repetitive actions that utilize the elbow area. Allow the inflammation to naturally subside. You may want to wrap the elbow with an ace bandage to remind yourself to be "easy" and to help support the muscles in the adjoining area of the pain.
