I'm 6 months pregnant and I'm having tightening pains in my lower back, what could be the cause of this

Question:
I'm 6 months pregnant, and I have been getting these tightening and really painful pains that shoot through the lower part of my stomach all the way through my lower back. It usually lasts about 2-4 minutes at the most. I had the first one even before I knew I was pregnant, and I get them every now and then.maybe 3 or 4 times a month. They are really uncomfortable and make me feel like I'm going to throw up (and sometimes I do). Does anyone know what these pains are?

I have a doctors appointment in a week, but I was curious if anyone knew, thanks :)

Answers:
I assume you have ruled out that these are not false labor pains. If they start coming at "regular" intervals you should not wait to your doctor's appointment to talk to him/her.

Beyond that, my first guess would be "ligament pain." while this can happen at any time during pregnancy, it is especially common at your stage. Your uterine and pelvic ligaments are getting loose in anticipation of the baby moving through the birth canal. This can be uncomfortable and is similar to what you are describing.

Also, backaches get more and more common as you get bigger and bigger, because your center of gravity is getting thrown off by the baby's weight.

In either case, you might want to try getting a pregnancy massage. It can help with ligament pain AND backaches, so you come out ahead either way.

I'm glad your going to the doctor, probably best for him/her to decide. And maybe if you don't sit up straight you might have pain in your lower back, I'm not sure, check with you doctor. GOOD LUCK!! Luv~Carly

your back is not use to have to carry to people its the waight well im not sure but it could be that your baby is heavy and causing the pain in your back..Good Luck and let me know how it goes with the doc.

It could be Braxton Hick's (False contractions) Or just the weight of your growing belly putting pressure on your back muscles

Throwing up is normal for pregnancy, congratulations.
If you had pain before your pregnancy, you likely have weak back muscles, abdominal muscles, or both. I recommend a core training program to get stronger, at least before you have another child. Get a qualified trainer and get stronger as soon as you are able - ask your doctor.
