9 year old daughter has one reg. kidney and one small, could this be a problem?

Question:
We are waiting for the follow up doctor's appointment, but as we wait can anyone shed some light on this?

My daughter's small kidney is approx. 1 cm smaller than her regular one according to the ultrasound. We were lead to do the ultrasound because she gets tummy aches a lot, no UTI's, just tummy aches several times a week. She is healthy and active other wise.

It's frustrating that they show you the films and tell you the areas of concern but do not/ cannot tell you what those concerns mean. I wish they wouldn't have told me the "concerns" and would just give me all the news at once! Now I have to wait 3 days for the Dr's appointment wondering and trying not to worry about my daughters condition (if she has one). Any input, anyone?

Answers:
Kidneys generally are uneven in size.
The kidney on the side of the liver, so her right side is genearlly smaller in size by a little bit like 1 cm due to the anatomy of the area.... I would not worry about the difference in the kidney size. They should not have told you that this was of concern. Almost every patient I have that gets an ultrasound of their kidneys have different sized kidneys. If they didn't see cysts, tumors, or stones.. I wouldn't worry.
I would worry more about the tummy aches, and what is actually causing them. Maybe check out the allergies like milk?
Or perhaps she will need a gastroenterologist to look at her.. there are pediatric ones...
Good luck.

Other Answers:
My Granny turned 76 this past March. A few years ago they ran some tests and found she only has one functioning kidney. The other never developed according to the doctor. They discovered this when she was having some problems with blood pressure and fluid. They attribute part of those problems to her just having the one kidney. They watch her closely for any problems, but she lived 70 years with just the one. She has always been a big water drinker, and takes pretty good care of herself.
