Somtimes but if i am at a really loud concert you can still hear the band through the microphone you speak into,
apparently, as you block the sound in one ear, the other ear is your only ear effectively
It helps to cut out the backround noises alittle
yes
Sometimes, but not always. If it is really loud around me like at work, then I still have a hard time hearing the other person. That is when I just shut my office door, that usually works.

Yes
It CAN help, but its not 100% fool-proof.
If you're in a very very noisy environment, then unfortunately, there is not much you can do to help yourself, other than get out of that environment.
If you're in a mildly noisy environment then closing one ear does help as its only background noise and not intrusive to the same extent.
This answer CAN help, but its not 100% foolproof!!!!!
The obvious answer here is to say 'only if you block the ear you are not using' (LOL). But i think it works to cover your other ear because it helps you block out what is going on around you so you can concentrate on what you want to hear.
