tell them to NEVER share clothes, hats, brushes, hairbands, etc. with the other kids, check their heads regularly, wash their clothes often even if they don't look dirty, if the kids have "nap time" or something like that at school, consider getting them their own private mats so they don't share with other kids, get other mothers to check their kids' heads often...and talk to the school office about regular school-wide lice checks- in my old school, if the nurse found you had lice you weren't allowed back in school until you got rid of it all (the school checked)- so consider getting the school to adopt a rule like that. in the event your kids DO get lice, keep them out of school until they get rid of it ALL (this usually takes a week or less if you catch the lice early)...SH 206 is a GREAT shampoo to get rid of the lice. good luck!!! =)
I'm not sure that there is an effective preventative.
But here's an interesting fact: Contrary to popular opinion, it's not the "dirty" people who get head lice. Lice actually prefer very clean, and especially straight, hair.
Some people who have very curly/frizzy hair dress their hair with oily things, and they don't wash their hair as often as straight-haired people, because curly/frizzy hair breaks easily, and it needs to stay somewhat oily and not be over-washed. Those folks actually get head lice far less-often than folks who have frequently-washed, straight(er) hair.
Given that the above is true, it seems to me that if I were to put a bunch of oily stuff (especially if it had essential oils that are insect repellents in it, such as catnip oil, tea tree oil, and suchlike) in my kids' hair that the lice might not want to live on their heads. But that would make them look weird. And it would also look dirty (and oily hair does, in fact, attract dirt). So it's a real trade-off as to whether it'd be better to let them be clean-looking and risk getting lice or oil them up and risk having them be laughed at for looking weird.
Yes, NEVER share.
Also, see if you can request a headcheck to be done in your child's class.
If bugs are found in a child's head, they are suposed to be sent home.
I don't think there is any means of prevention but I certainly would watch close for lice and if you see the child scratching their scalp I would really look close for nits or lice. Nits are the eggs from lice and you will find them on the hair follicle. It looks like a real little white ball of lint wrapped around the hair shaft. Good luck
