My son has pneumonia?

Question:
He is 6 years old and has been given anti-biotics from the hospital, how long will it take before i see an improvement? Will he get worse before he gets better?

Answers:
If he's on the right antibiotics he should notice he's feeling better within 48 hours of starting them. If he's no better after than, get a sputum sample and get the doc to send it to the lab for culture and sensitivity - this means that the right antibiotics can be given. Make sure he finishes the course even if he feels better, if he stops before the course is finished, the infection is likely to come back worse than ever and be much harder to treat.

In the mean time, give him plenty of fluids, and if he develops a high temperature give him some junior paracetamol (not aspirin as this can cause stomach upset). If he starts shivering, check his temperature - it's likely that he's too hot rather than too cold. If this happens, sponge him down with tepid water to help bring the fever down - don't wrap him up even warmer as this will make the temperature even higher. Hope he feels better soon. :)
depending on the severity of the infection, the antibiotics should effect improvement within 48 hours. The fever should go down, the cough will take a little longer to go away, and he should be feeling better within three days. It could be faster than this or slower than this, but these are averages.
