what does it mean to sprain or strain of costochondral junction?

Question:
I believe it means that you have a simple fracture and the doctor don't want you to freak out about it because I saw the x-rays and you could clearly see that there was a snap and separation of one bone

Answers:
It means you pulled a muscle between your ribs. What you may have seen is a displaced rib, or you may have been looking at a "floating rib", those that aren't attached to the sternum and aren't attached to the cartilage of the other ribs. If it were a fracture and were displaced, he definitely would have told you because that would have needed intervention to prevent it from puncturing another organ..like your lung, liver or spleen.

If you want a second opinion, ask a chiropractor to check it out for you.

Other Answers:
A costochondral junction is the joint where your ribs attach to the sternum. For starters, you can't sprain or strain a bone. The joints contain a fibrous cartilage that has been overextended, resulting in the sprain or strain.
the above answer is quite correct. Just for clarification though, your sternum is your breast bone in the middle. The space you probably saw was a natural joint between the bones of the rib and breast bone. If it was a rib fracture, the doctor should have told you so.
