I have had tension headaches for almost 7 years now. I tried seeing all kinds of doctors, and most of them are just pill pushers. I started going to a chiropractor...what a relief! I swear by my chiropractor, too.

Taking regular timeout for a few minutes of quiet and muscle relaxation is very important for tension headaches. Even if you have to hide in the bathroom or cellar to do it: 1) be as quiet and still as possible for at least 5 minutes every few hours; 2) while you're having your quiet time, consciously focus on every muscle of your face, head & neck, relaxing each muscle as you think of it. Take your time with it. When you think those muscles are relaxed, go over them again, getting them to relax even more. Let yourself go slack-jawed. Try not to let your mind focus on problems - think of the color white however you like it - as fog, clouds, snow or clean sheets.
Be very conscious of jaw muscles and clenching or grinding your teeth. If you clench or grind your teeth a lot, see a dentist because that can cause headaches from mismatched or improper bite, or from jaw joint problems.
