The main cause of heartburn is not always something you ate.
It can be the result of what is commonly known as GERD which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. This is a condition whereby acids in the stomach cause food you have eaten to partially back up into your esophagus (throat). When this happens, heartburn is most often the result.
You may not necessarily have this problem since you say you've only had heartburn once and recently. It is possible you ate something you've never eaten before and often times, it can be the result of of emotional distress as well, or at least, if we are feeling upset for some reason, this will not help. Some people, when upset, may either eat more or less. Neither is good and therefore both can cause the reflux of acids.
I've been dealing with this problem for quite a while. Sometimes I will have heartburn as it is most commonly called - even though it has nothing to do with the human heart itself. I can go for days having heartburn and then it just disappears for several more days.
At first, I just took an antacid tablet - I prefer Rolaids Tropical Fruit (pink in colour) because I just don't like peppermint or spearmint which are common flavours of antacid tablets.
Several months ago, I finally had to take a prescription medication called Pantaloc. There are several medications that can be prescribed but unless your problem becomes frequent or worse than the episode you already had, I advise just trying an over-the-counter remedy. You can also take an antacid in liquid form. Just check with a pharmacist and ask what he/she thinks is best for you.
You say you haven't eaten well lately and this may be the only reason why you had one episode. I advise that you try to regulate your diet and stay away from spicy foods and dairy products for a little while to see if this improves your situation. Believe it or not, drinking milk does not solve the problem even though it was believed for many years, this was the answer to heartburn.
I hope you will try a few different things on the basis of over-the-counter remedies first and see what happens. If you improve your diet and take an antacid when necessary but the problem occurs more often or episodes of heartburn seem to worsen, then see a doctor. You should rule out having a gastric ulcer for which you may require prescription medication.
heartburn occurs when acids and bile from the stomach splash up past the hiatus (stomach sphincter) and into the esophagus. This can be helped by eating smaller amounts more frequently, remaining upright for at least thirty minutes after eating, and for quick relief drink some antacid. If it persists in happening, you may have developed an incompetent hiatus, in this case you need medications and should consult your doctor.
Acid in your stomach causes it. You need to get checked by a Dr. and they can do tests and prescribe something for it.
The "burn" in heartburn usually comes from stomach acid that has escaped upnto your esophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Normally, the muscular valve between the esophagus and the stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), keeps acid where it belongs. It relaxes to let food pass into the stomach and then constricts. But the LES doesn't always close as tightly as it should. And that's when acid and other stuff in the stomach can slosh upward -- a process referred to as gastroesophageal reflux.
