is a pre-op epidural dangerous?
Question:
Answers:
Everything in medicine has its risks and benefits.if the risk outweighs the benefits, then it shouldn't be done.however, epidurals are in general safe.there are side effects, nothing in medicine is 100% safe.but if the pain and surgery are worth it.then you need the epidural.you can always ask them to just knock you out completely with the gas instead if you don't want the epidural.but you should consider all the circumstances, sometimes your doctor believes the epidural is the best way block the pain without all the risks of general anesthesia.

-Well , I had this procedure while in labor. There is risk of leakage of cerebral spinal fluid, which is not uncommon . Laying flat afterwards helps to prevent slamming headaches. Now 14 years later I still experience a very sharp knife-like pain in that lumbar area of my spine.on rare occassions, briefly, never as bad as the first few. The first time I felt this it was just a few days after, maybe a week and I seriously dropped to my knees , sudden sharp and knife like, but not of long duration.
