High cholesterol age 14...?

Question:
Ok so I went to the doctor a few days ago to get my blood taken to get tested and today they called saying my cholesterol level is 151 and the healthy i guess range is from 37 to 110. I am only 14, weigh 90.4 lbs and am 5.3 ft! I eat very healthy so my mom is even confused about what is goin on! I am fine right??...

Answers:
It could just be simplely hereditary. You are in the normal weight class, you eat healty and probably exercise. Trust me 151 is not so high that you need to worry about it. Normal adult ranges for Cholesterol in my lab are 120-240 so you are normal there. I wouldn't worry about it.

Other Answers:
wow! something must be wrong with you... go see another doctor. good luck!
Probably the level they mentioned is your TOTAL cholesterol, and it should be below 200, so probably you are just fine.

As you probably know there are many types of cholesterol. The bad cholesterol, named LDL, is the one that should be between 70 - 130 ideally. However at your age, probably it's OK if you have it below 160.

So, just make sure that the value they gave you was the total cholesterol and you're completely fine! And even if the 151 they gave you was the LDL it's ok for your age. Sometimes at your age they will do only total cholesterol.

So, call them and ask what I told you and mail me back if you have further questions. Good luck!
Hi, You need to have your Mom do some family health background research. This is probably family history going on here. My husband had a heart attack at age 47 and had to go through quadruple by-pass. The Dr. told us that all the damage done to his arteries were done by the time he was in his early 20's. We knew there was a family history, but didn't take it serious, now we do. I have told my kids what to watch for and have their Drs. keep a close eye on him. One thing you can do is limit your starch intake i.e. white bread, flour, pastas, white rice and so on. Ask your Mom to please use only Olive oil or Canola oil in her cooking and if there is a family history of heart disease in your family please tell your Dr asap. One of the best ways to get your cholesterol down is to walk 3 miles a day at a very fast pace. That really helped my husband. The other thing you need to find out is where is your good cholesterol at. It is very important to know the separate numbers for good and bad cholesterol. You and your Mom should go to WebMD and check it all out. It is a great site to help you understand medical issues. Good luck to you.
