Can sleeping on your arm and waking with totally asleep be dangerous?
Question:
Answers:
No. When your arm falls asleap, it is not due to blood loss to your arm, that is idiotic. All joints have what are called an astimosis, which is where multiple arteries take up the slack for an artery that is cut off due to a strange position. Any anatomy book will show you there are several arteries that surround the shoulder and elbow to do this. The sensation of your arm falling asleap is due to impingement of nerves, not arteries. Nerves carry signals from your arm to your brain, and if you are lying such that a nerve is pushed on by a bone or muscle, the nerve often stops sending signals to the brain, and the lack of signal is translated into a numb feeling, much like the feeling you get at the dentist's office when he numbs you up by injecting a chemical that stops nerve impulses. The dentist does not inject you with something that blocks the arteries. The tissues in your arm would die if they went more than a few minutes without blood.
Other Answers:
The reason your arm is asleep when you wake up is because when you sleep on you arm, your weight is cutting off the circulation so the blood is not flowing properly
yes it can be dangerous (if you can't move), the circulation is cut off and tissue that is deprived of oxygen can die, but usually the human body has "sensors" and will wake you up to change positions. I hope not. That's happened to me lots of times. I wake up and it's like I have the arm of a corpse attached to my body. My whole arm is just completely dead, like an arm made out of wax. It kinda freaks me out, I don't think it's ever caused any read damage though.
yes
