Why is health care so hard to get when you have preexsisting conditions?

Question:
My husband was laid of due to a plant closure and we are now on COBRA. Well we have been shopping for health insurance and found that we cannot get it due to our preexsisting medical cond. We would have to go through a group rate through the state.
Q: Are there any group insurances we can get that wont cost us an arm a leg and our first born in California??

Answers:
I answered your question in another board, but I’ll repost it here:

Insurance is more expensive if you already have health problems because the insurance company knows that you are more likely to need medical attention. Your best bet is to get insurance through work because you should be accepted that way (group insurance is easier to qualify for than individual insurance). However, there are some state-sponsored plans you can enroll in. Contact the California state insurance department for more information. Specifically, California has a high-risk insurance pool for people unable to obtain private health insurance (Iink below). Risk pools are developed to help decrease the cost of health insurance and increase access to health insurance by buying coverage in bulk. The name of the program you would probably be interested in is the California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP). I’ve included a link to a .pdf booklet explaining the program. You can only enroll for 36 months.

I would also try and get quotes on locally available health plans. Try MostChoice.com. It offers online quotes and plan details, but you’ll be more interested in the site’s ability to put you in touch with CA-licensed insurance agents without any cost or obligation to you. You just tell the agents what you want in terms of coverage and price and let them do the searching for you. If you don’t like what they have to offer or private insurance is too expensive, then check out the state programs.

Good luck. I hope you and your husband get help soon.

If you currently have insurance and can show proof of that coverage, then insurance companies are not supposed to be able to deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions. I imagine that you can get some legal advice from the state of California on this issue.

Depending on the severity of your conditions, you might be able to get Disability., but then it takes two years of benefits before you get to enact Medicare.

The money you get from disability might cover some things.

Otherwise try these:

http://www.California.MedHealthInsurance.com
http://www.bluecrossca.com/
http://www.california-health-insurance.com/

or others like it in your web browser, mostly google.com OK pretend you were a company and you were going to insure someone.

You charge 1500 a month for coverage for a healthy family
it costs 100 for admin expenses.
900 goes to pay for major medical stuff like hospitalizations
500 goes to pay for doctor visits medications etc.

Now someone comes in with a condition that costs 300 a month to treat and triples their risk of hospitalization.

so you take the 1500 add 300 to it.
Take the 900 for hospitalization and multiply it by 3 and add that to the 1500. Your plan would now cost 4500 a month to run. Rather than try to charge you that, they just say no.

The solution is this. Make insurance companies continue to cover any condition that happens to you while you were insured by them, even after you are no longer insured by them. Think about it this way. If you get into a car accident one day and get new insurance the next. Your old insurance pays for the repairs, not the new one.

This would also help people who loose their insurance because they got sick and couldn't work. If you think about it only retired people have long-term illness protection. I am paying less than 1/2 of what I was before after going online & submitting a quote request – five companies fight for your business. They keep undercutting each other on price which saved me alot!
