I over strained myself running last Sunday. Now, a week later, I have severe pain right below my knees.?

Question:
I am new to running, and did too much last week. The knee pain makes many movements - especially going down stairs - extremely painful. Any ideas on what i could do to relive it?

Answers:
rest, ice, compression & elevation. that's what i know to do. oh, i know you may not want to hear this, but you're gonna have to lay off running for a while - kick it down to a nice powerwalk once you rest up. less stress on the knees.

Lay off running until the pains subsides. In the meantime follow the RICE protocol. REST< ICE<COMPRESSION>ELEVATION.
If you are not allergic to aspirin or Tylenol or Motrin take it for the swelling and pain. Sounds like the meniscus.
You may have shin splints! These are very painful and would be in the vicinity that you are talking about. Alternate between ice and heat (like a heating pad) on the painful area!

First you need to stay off it for at least 1 hour.please use some (not being funny)but some Ben-gay or icy hot on your knee with a warm(not hot) dry towel. point put a towel in the dryer for a few minute. if it still hurt or there more pain please go to your doctor.
Tendonitis, get a anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen. 500 mg
If one is unaccustomed to rigorous physical activity, it does cause strain and pain to one's body. Warming up before strenuous activity is very important. Slow stretching of the muscles (which you intend to use to 'run' with) is highly recommended prior to run. Going through raising of the arms, as well as, stretching legs in a variety of lunges or even touching the toes and 'holding' the position for 20 seconds is one way to prevent injury and to warm the muscles up before exercise. It is also suggested after the run to 'cool down' and resume a normal pace of breathing, heart rate, etc.
