Dr. Richards is a native Californian, born in Berkeley and raised in Sunnyvale. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in nutritional science from University of California, Davis.

She then went on to medical school at Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Dr. Richards completed her residency at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles and in 1986, during her residency, received the Associate Group Resident's Award at Childrens Hospital.

Dr. Richards joined Kaiser Permanente's pediatrics team at the Milpitas Medical Offices in February of 1994. Prior to joining Kaiser, Dr. Richards worked as a traveling physician and worked throughout the country. At one time, she was licensed to practice medicine in 16 states!

Currently, she acts as the Assistant Chief of the Department of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

When she is not busy attending to patients, Dr. Richards spends time bicycling, jogging and traveling around the world. She is also an avid sports fan who enjoys watching San Jose Sharks and San Francisco Giants games. Dr. Richards speaks Spanish and has worked with Interplast Plastic Surgery teams in Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, and Bangladesh.
