Is it possible fr a person to be naturally nocturnal?

It's been going on for years and when I do get to sleep it's so deep that loud noises etc don't phase me.

It must be normal. I'm the same way. So are numerous other night shift workers. I can not go to sleep before 2 or 3 am, and 4 or 5 am is the norm for me. Even if I have to get up at 8am the next morning and I'm tired all day, I still can't fall asleep before 2 or 3. I was like this as a kid in school, just not as extreme.
Don't worry about it. It's only a problem if it's interfereing with your work or home life. If it is, I suggest doing something like yoga or meditation before bed or talking to your Dr. about a sleep medication.

I clicked on your question because I was hoping to see a good answer. I am the same way as you described. When I sleep during the day--it's my best sleep. At night, it's hard for me to sleep, but it sucks because I have a day job.
isn't that called insomnia?i could be completely wrong but i have this thing for pulling all nighters and then running when the sun comes up and one day my cousin asked me if i had insomnia. maybe you should look into that. Or talk to your doctor, they know stuff like this.

What I alluded to in the previous question was why that person preferred the nighttime over the day - there is as much beauty and tranquility with the sun out if you are looking for it. What I noticed was one major thing that was absent from the day to the night: people. If he/she was aversive to people, interruptions, etc. of course they would prefer the night, since most people are sleeping!
What I would look at in your case is WHEN you first started staying up late at night, and WHY. Then, you can determine and backtrack to justify why you do it now, and how you want to classify yourself in this case. It is possible that you are literally functioning in a time zone that is on the other side of the world - speculating that either you are 'still' there, or you need to be.
Sleeping soundly is your body's way of demanding rest - if you don't get enough sleep, you are subject to some developmental/recovery disabilities that can have a major effect on you as you get older.
So, it is possible that you are "nocturnal", as you are obviously aware that humans aren't originally nocturnal, but are extremely adaptible. Find out why you stay up late, and you can adjust it so that you are more assurred in your lifestyle.
I work with people with disabilities, and have experience working with several people who operated on 'reversed sleep cycles'. Some patterns were caused by a certian cocktail of medications they were on, and others were caused simply by the disability. People with autism especially seem prone to this effect. they sleep during the day and wake during the night. These people tend to keep the whole family awake in the night because of their unusal sleep problems. After a while, the sleep problems, if unsolved, can cause both physical and mental stress in other family members which in turn would seriously compromise the quality of care for the person with autism.
Yes, I am the same way. Have always had a tendency to stay up late and sleep in late, even as a young child. That's why I like to work the late shift, so I can sleep in. Doesn't give me much of a social life throughout the week, but I can still party on the weekends! :)
When I work day shift I have to take sleep aids (valerian or melatonin) to feel sleepy at a decent hour.
