ICES

Ice Compression Elevation Support

Ice - 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, for 2 hours. No ice for 2 hours. 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, for 2 hours. No ice for 2 hours. That will protect you from frostbite.

Compression - Ace bandage, snug. You'll need to rewrap it every so often to keep it snug. Don't turn your toes blue.

Elevation - Don't just prop up your foot, support your knee! It helps me to keep it slightly bent.

Support - Crutches or a cane if it's really bad. Don't put too much stress on it.

After the first 24 to 48 hours following an injury, I think you're supposed to switch from Ice to Heat. For a chronic problem or old injury, use whichever seems to help more at the time. Sometimes one will seem to help more, sometimes the other. I think heat is 1 hour on, 1 hour off.
Ice the knee to reduce inflamation ... this will not hurt the nerves at all.
Ice it for 48 hours. If it still hurts, go see a Dr.
