Have you been running? Maybe you have a stitch?

This could be any number of things. If you have a temperature, nausea, vomiting, it could be your appendix. If the pain is that bad, you really should see a doctor. Sooner rather than later.. Ask yourself if you feel bad enough to go to the emergency room. Chances are that if you have a doctor and call them, they will tell you to go. National Health help line. They are great and will put your mind at rest

probably kidneys.

Sorry but can you clarify if it is under your ribs or near your hip?
They are two different parts of your body.

If actually under your ribs it could be psoas muscle that is near to your diaphragm, if you have problems with posture it could be getting stretched and so causing cramping painful sensations under the ribs on the left hand side - in which case a chiropractor is needed to correct the problem. Pushing with your hand from the ribs down towards the right hand side of your body gives some releif.

appendix? go hosp. or GP asap You haven't given us much to go on and yet some of us still managed to make a "diagnosis". Interesting.. I am unable to question you further to find out your pain rating on a scale of 1 to 10, when it first started, what the quality of the pain is (sharp, aching, stabbing, dull, etc.), is it constant, is there anything you do that makes it better/worse, what have you tried to do about it, any other symptoms, are you aware of any existing medical conditions, blah, blah, nor am I able to give you physical assessment. I suggest that you see your health care provider as soon as your are able to get in. Mention severe pain and you will be seen sooner. Good luck and take care.

Note to Jadea: You are correct in stating that the hips and ribs are two different parts of the body, however, remember that the ribs wrap around and so the pain described can be both under the ribs and near the hip if the pain is at the left lateral (side) area of the body.
