A vein on my arm just suddenly swelled and is sore to the touch with blue brusing around it. What is it.?

Question:
It just happened from one minute to the next and I am wondering if it is a blood clot and if so should I go to the doctor right away. It is on the inner part of my arm halfway between the wrist and the elbow. Thanks for your help in advance.

Answers:
It may be a broken vein with a small hematoma. This does happen. Blood clots usually appear as a reddened area and more often develop in lower leg veins. If after this it still bothers you, feel free to consult your health care provider.

In the meantime, you may wish to use ice packs 15 min. on/15 min. off for 2 hours at a time and avoid any aspirin or aspirin-type products, including ibuprofen. Do not apply ice directly to your skin. Use a plastic storage bag to hold the ice and cover it with a wash cloth or pillow case. Keep the arm immobile and elevated as much as possible.

I would go to the dr.

This could be a blood clot, an anurism, or any number of other things. I would see a doctor asap, because if it is an anurism it can burst at any moment. Most people associate these with the brain, but you can get them anywhere. Yeah, it soulds like a clot or an infecton. Go to the doc or ER unless you want to have a bigger problem.

Always, always check with your dr. If it is clot, it is SERIOUS. Seek medical help. Warm moist heat until you get to the ER is OK..DO NOT RUB the bruised area.

It could be a varicose vain or a blood clot. If it is a clot, you should go to the doctor. If the clot comes loose, it could travel to you brain and cause a stroke.

Call the Emergency Room at your hospital and ask to speak to a nurse. Describe your symptoms.
Its free and you'll be able to rest easy.
