It could also be something called a Morton's neuroma. Morton's neuromas are benign "tumors" of the nerve (really not a tumor, more like a thickening). They are VERY painful.

I wouldn't worry. Sounds like something benign - maybe a keratotic cyst. They might have to cut it out.
