To the ER Doc's out there. Why are you so quick to remove a c-collar and longboard from an accident patient?

Question:

Answers:
the c-collar that is used by ems when the patient is brought in is disposable and not re-used on the next patient the ambulance transports-so it always gets thrown out after a patient uses it.

it is standard protocol for ems to put a c-collar and backboard on a patient that has been involved in any type of motor vehicle accident. they will also use the c-collar if there are any chances of a neck/head injury.

once in the emergency room-the doctor will do a quick assessment on you-if there are no significant injuries to your head or neck area-the collar is removed. On patients that are considered trauma level patients-xrays and ct scans ( a special picture taken of the brain using three dimensional computer images) are taken and depending on what those show will determine if the c-collar is removed.

the backboard is used primarly to keep you from moving around while being transported in the ambulance-especially if you've been involved in a situation or accident to where there is a chance of internal injuries.

Other Answers:
Actually, its because the people who work on the ambulance, the EMS workers are waiting for the collars because they cost a lost of money. The doctors try to get the collar off as soon as possible so the EMS can get back to their job, otherwise the hospital will throw the collar out. :)
