Is it painful to have a colonoscopy without anesthetic and calming medicine? Or is it just in certain cases?

Gee I thought having someone stick a long tube up your butt would be totally pain free as a matter a fact it will be a jolly good time. Go for it.

Other Answers:
it is, a little.you need local anastesia at the very least.

yes it is that is why they give you drugs. take the drugs
Hi,

Personally if I was having any kind of internal examination done that requires me to be taken to theatre, I would have Anaesthesia because I'm such a wimp! Lol.

I would speak to your doctor about your concerns as he/she can answer them more accurately for you.
I had mine done while I was asleep. So I wouldn't know. But it sounds a bit painful so I wouldn't try it. There is a reason why they give you the meds.
I'm not sure about an actual colonoscopy, I just had a sigmoidscopy & was told it was only mildly uncomfortable. This was not the case for me (I am not a big baby when it comes to pain).
Mine was extremely painful. Just ask your doctor for something that will relax you. I do know some people whose doctors put them under a mild anesthetic. Whatever you decide just be sure to get it done.
oh yes, think about it, a hose uo your a#@ ! you might want somthing to calm you down.
I had an upper and lower GI done and had IV drugs. You are awake the whole time, you just don't remember it. I do remember being wheeled into the room, them putting the IV and medicine into my arm and then waking up in the recovery room. Completely simple, no stress, and no memories of the unpleasant event.

My understanding is that this type of pain relief is less risky than total sedation (the type people sometimes don't wake up from) because you're not totally under. Ask your doctor what the risks are for the type of sedation he/she recommends. If you're avoiding drugs because you want to see what s/he is doing during the procedure, then ask for a copy of the video tape they'll use during the procedure.

You're not going to win any 'hero awards' for going drug free, so take the drugs and make it as unpleasant for yourself as possible (assuming you understand the risks as described by your doctor). Good luck with the procedure and I hope your results are healthy.
It depends on your pain tolerance as well as the length and shape of your colon (how many curves). Most patients have discomfort during colonoscopies, some experience down right pain (though most don't realize it as they are usually sedated and have pain medicine on board).

In 15 years I've had only two patients wish to have the scope without sedation (calming medicine). Both were very busy and couldn't afford the time to "get over" sedation. Both were youngish and had never had constipation or other chronic colonic conditions. Surprisingly, both repeated that they'd do it the same way if they ever needed a colonoscopy again.

Still, if I were to get a colonoscopy (mine is due in 2 years!!).put me to sleep. Why not. Sedation is very low risk. If done correctly it seems like you've just skipped through an unpleasant scene in your life. Most patients wake up after wards and wonder when we're going to get started.

I suppose it would be fun to watch the entire colonoscopy, just to see what I looked like inside as well as be aware if something was found, but I'd have pain meds and sedation readily available in case I couldn't handle the scope maneuvering around the curves.
