Can you drink alcohol with Clarithromycin 500mg?
Question:
Answers:
No.....it is NOT.
Despite what a nursing STUDENT says, Clarithromycin is converted by the liver to an active metabolite....14-OH clarithromycin, the presence of alcohol interferes with this thus can decrease the effectiveness of the drug. In antibiotics it is CRITICAL that you achieve and maintain a specific blood level of the drug to adequately treat the infection. If you interfere with this you won't get the full benefits of therapy.

aahhh no! it can make infection more difficult to treat
A widespread myth holds that you shouldn't drink alcohol while taking antibiotics, but in fact, drinking doesn't lessen the effects of the drugs. However, alcohol can lower your general energy and delay your recovery so it is best to minimize drinking until you've finished the prescribed course of antibiotic treatment. (Beyond that, chronic liver damage from excessive alcohol consumption can affect the metabolism and toxicity of antibiotics.)
