Has anyone had hip surgery? Were you happy with the outcome?

My hubby just got back from the doctor - who said his hip is degenerating. He needs to get an MRI and then perhaps surgery. Hopefully, not - I hear it is a pretty major surgery. Any experiences - either good or bad?

My father, who is 55, started having problems with his right hip five years ago, and coupled with his excess weight (about 300 pounds on a 5'10" frame) and heart problems, it just made it extremely difficult for him to walk. His doctor told him the same thing your husband's told him - that it was degenerating, and would have to be replaced. My father was terrified of the surgery, and kept putting it off. By doing that, he started putting more weight on his left hip, which then started having problems too. Finally he could barely walk anymore from the pain. My mother and I finally convinced him to get the hip surgery. He was convinced it would destroy him, he was so scared... but... three days after the surgery, he was walking laps around the hospital. Five months after the surgery, he feels absolutely no pain at all. His left hip is getting better, because it doens't have to bear all the weight anymore. So from my experience, I would tell your husband to go for it. It is one of the most common procedures, and surgeons today are very experienced and skilled with it, and new technology is making them better and more durable everyday. I know it's scary, but it makes a world of difference. Neither of you will regret it. Good luck, I know how scary this is, but have faith. It really does help.

well, about 4yrs ago I dislocated my hip and that really does hurt. The experience is a good and bad one, the good is that I can walk again and move around, but the bad part is that when I sit down my right leg doesn't really sit up straight, well place right on the floor. and sometimes I can feel it get out of place or whenever your being inmate with your partner, your legs can't really stretch out like it did " before" the surgery. the only really problem I had was limping .that wa it.
