What's the worst accident you've had?

In 1982, my co-driver (stepfather) in a semi truck caught the edge of the road, that had been recently resurfaced, but the guardrails were not yet put back. It was in the Mohave desert in California. Over 60 miles from the nearest city. We went down a steep embankment, but there boulders at the bottom. As they passed under the semi, the second trailer was torn off and the first trailer did a 360 degree turn on the fifth wheel, smashing the cab from the frame. I woke up 50 yards away with several broken bones. I could see my stepfather trying to find me. His eyes were covered in blood and an arm torn up pretty good. I have no idea how he survived. He was in the driver's seat while I was in the sleeper.

I had to direct him up to the road way to flag down a car, as they were going right pass and not seeing us down below. It was past midnight.

It took over an hour for rescue to arrive, though I didn't know it as I kept passing out. They didn't have rescue helicopters at the time, so we had to be taken back to the nearest city hospital, who stabilized us, than 90 miles to a larger one that could handle the severity of our injuries.

The military had some great photos of me sailing out over the desert, but they would not release them. We only learned about them when a couple of scientist got drunk at a bar near Edwards Air Force base and talked about photographing us as the accident took place. The camera was a new model. They were photographing the VIN numbers on cars driving down the highway, from 30 miles away.
