perforated eardrum?

Question:
I've had a perforated eardrum for about 3-4 years and im not sure how i got it. Because of this matter ive had an ear infection several times i believe i got it while i was having a shower and going for a swim. I had tubes in my ears when i was 10 yrs old and my right ear is perfectly fine but by left ear is just not too well. Now I'm 15 and I went to a ENT specialist. Well he said the perforation was too small so hearing loss wound'nt be a problem but big enough for the water to enter the middle ear. He breifly explained about the surgery called Tympanoplasty. For some reason whenever i try to hold my nose and blow it seems the air is coming out from my left ear. I can hear better with my right ear than my left ear... Can a really small perforation cause a hearing loss...?? And If i do the surgery would can i hear better than before..?

Answers:
I have exactly the same issue. You do lose some hearing due to the perforation, because the vibrations don't resonate quite as well, and you're far more prone to middle ear infections, which as you know are nasty. You also can't dive or equalise.

I'm also investigating surgery, not sure if it'd improve your hearing though.

Listen to your doctor sunshine.
I think it could cause hearing loss. I would ask the doctor or another specialist for more information. To avoid more ear infections, I would advise you to put cotton or an earplug in your ear before you do anything that could get water inside. Just don't put it in too far. Or you could put a plastic bag or plastic wrap over your ear and secure with a rubber band before you shower, but don't make it too tight. Also, try not to hold your nose and blow. People with intact eardrums might be able to do it gently to equalize the pressure in their ears, but a perforated eardrum could possibly be damaged even more.
