Is distilled water bad for your health and if it is, why?

Question:

Answers:
No, of course it is not bad for your health. Distilled water should nothing but water. Some will argue that since it lacks vitamins and minerals, and since the more that you drink the more that you will pee...with that urine containing numerous minerals...distilled water is bad for you and is leeching out all of those minerals. This is ignorance and persuasive marketing at its best. First of all, water should not be delievering vitamins to you anyway, and it should not be a significant source of minerals. In fact, if the mineral concentration is too high, you are unlikely to drink it. The minerals and vitamins that your body needs should mostly come from the foods that you eat, with supplimentation with juices and the like. Water should be for hydration, and "fortifed" waters with added vitamins and minerals are just a marketing ploy. (Ok, so I do drink some of them myself, they do taste better...distillled water does not taste that hot).

Ok, with all of that being said, if you are working in a hot and/or humid environment or in another situation where you may become an heat casualty or are prone to dehydration you may want to avoid distilled water alone and use an electrolye solution. If you are sweating a lot your body will be losing a lot of electrolytes and water...the quickest way to replace these is with an electrolyte solution such as commercial sports drinks. Word of warning, though, these are usually too concentrated and it is possible for you to cause the levels of electrolytes in your body to rise danergously high. It is usually recommended that if you are working or exercising in a hot environment that you drink a commercial electrolyte solution diluted to half strength...1/2 water and 1/2 of the solution.

One of the other posters warned of water intoxication...these should not be an issue at all in an otherwise healthy individual. Water intoxication has been on the rise in recent years, but this is mostly seen in infants whose mothers first refuse to breast fed them and then force them to drink more water when they are hungry because they do not want to buy the expensive baby formula. Even as infants, we have a natural tendancy not to drink too much water, but the straving infants end up drinking the water more and more out of desperation. Adults normally will not drink too much water either, we will stop when we have had enough and it will take a whole lot to cause water intoxication. However, if the person forces themselves to drink more water, or if they have an underlying psychological condition that makes them drink too much water, or if they have medical condition that makes prone to water intoxication (such as kidney and heart disease or illness/injury to the pituitary gland and such) then an adult may experience water intoxication. Most healthy individuals should not worry about water intoxication at all. With most people, the more water that you drink the better...ideally you want your urine to be clear when you pee, with little to no yellow.

Other Answers:
Some believe it leaches the minerals from your body.
there is no scentific proof that said distilled water is no good, but as normal water contained mineral, chorine.
Distilled water contain nothing but safe water.
Because it's mineral free, it leaches them from your body. However, there is a simple fix - add coral calcium with 70+ trace minerals and sea salt to the water.
it has no trace minerals that are essential for our system , and can cause water intoxication, which can cause dulling of all the systems in our body in broad terms
