Muscle strain:

Grade 1: Muscle or tendon fibers are stretched and a few may be torn (mild pain, no loss of muscle function)
Grade 2: A partial tear of the muscle or tendon (moderate pain, edema, bruising, and moderate loss of muscle function)
Grade 3/4: A full thickness tear of the muscle or tendon (severe pain, edema, bruising, and complete loss of muscle function)
