Question about Vacutainer Needles?

Question:
How do nurses or lab technicians know if the needle they are using to draw blood is new or not. I went and got my blood drawn several times and always I see that the needles are not wrapped. They just remove the cap and thats it. So how do they know it is not used before?

I should add that I saw the nurse recap the needle before disposing it away in the container. I mean what if she by mistake put it back in the drawer with the clean needles and then used it again by mistake? this is worrying me

Answers:
The cap you see is sealed and the seal is broken when the cap is pulled off. A professional always uses the sharps disposal to get rid of used needles, the nurse should not be recapping as she puts herself at risk to be poked. There is little risk to you in a professional setting. so relax. You may want to mention to the office manager that that nurse is recapping before disposing.

Other Answers:
Vacutainer needles, although not individually wrapped, have a paper seal around the cap that breaks when you open it. However, the appropriate technique is NOT to recap the needle because it adds to the risk of needlestick, but to make you feel better, most people have a routine when drawing blood and it involves throwing their used needle away at a certain point in the process. If it would make you feel better, ask the technician drawing your blood to show you the intact seal on the needle before he/she uncaps it.
