Hurts to move my neck,, hard to move in direction as if trying to touch left ear to sholder. HELP?
Question:
It doesn't hurt when I'm typing and sitting at my computer now, BUT when I try to bend my head as if trying to touch my left ear to my left sholder in that direction I got Extremem pain. I just took an Advil and while it seems to dull the pain It still hurts when I move my neck in that direction.
I used 3 high stacked mats as pillows that were fairly hard. I'm guessing my neck overstretched somehow since my mats/pillows were too high What I want to know is If this will just go away and what could I possiably have done. Like did I just pinch a nerve or did I possiably tear a muscle or something worse. It happened this morning so I'll wait before going to dctor or chiropractor.. Since it's not like my neck's been like this for weeks. BUT any advice would be much appreciated.
Also has this every happened to any of you. Thanks in Advance. Also I can turn my neck toward the right sholder just fine.
Answers:
You are potentially right that you may have overstretched your neck. There have already been some good answers such as using a small rolled towel under your neck to re-establish its normal "lordotic" curve.
About 90% of acute neck/back pain subsides within days to a couple weeks. Signs that you may need medical attention to rule out a pinched nerve include pain/weakness/numbness radiating into the upper extremity, and an increase in these symptoms with coughing/sneezing. Based on the symptoms you describe, your injury is probably more consistent with a muscle/ligament strain.
Since this happened today, use intermittent cold packs for the first 24-72 hours and then progress to intermittent use of a heating pad or warm shower. NEVER sleep on a heating pad.
See a physician if the symptoms do not begin to subside quickly or if they get progressively worse.

you need some muscle relaxant.
i hurt mine a few weeks ago not really sure how i went to my gp and he told me to keep trying to move it all the time .
my hubby hurt his in a car smash and when he went to a&e they told him the same and they sead they dont put those big collers on any more as they make it much worse i hope this helps
Sounds like you just slept in a position the body didnt like. Try lying on your back w/ a towel rolled up to support your neck and if you have a heating pad that will work just fine (Please be careful using devices such as this) if you have a store bought throw away heating device make sure to wrap it with a towel, do not expose directly to skin. I hope this helps!

Propping the head up too high is always contra indicated. tends to reverse the curve of the cervical spine..would be much more advisable to find a small pillow and place it under your neck, rather than your head. You apparently overstretched the neck muscles and they are letting you know they can do much to create discomfort..remembering, those muscles fasten to bones and when they contract, those bones are going to be pulled out of position. Now we are getting into the area of having an effect on the nerves exiting, between those bones. They can be exposed to pressure from those bones, pulled out of their normal position.
You may get some relief just by lying down with a rolled up towel under your neck or, just hanging your head over the edge of the bed.
This condition could be an indication also, there is underlying problem that has not been attended to. Creating other neurological symptoms not mentioned here.
