How do you keep from getting a hernia?

Question:
in my job Im doing a lot of lifting and I want to know how to be cautious.

Answers:
Get one of those belts. Be serious about it! You can buy them at Home Depot. Hernia repair surgery is no fun and often it fails in the long run. After I had my 2 "meshes" put in, I had to change my own dressing and clean the bloody wound sometimes, because the surgeon could not see me every day during the 2-3 weeks it took to heal. Try sticking a saline-drenched cotton swab 2 inches into your stomach. It's not as bad as do-it-yourself brain surgery, but you get the idea.
Aside from that keep your abs strong.

Other Answers:
Lifting can cause hernias, as you know. You must wear a backbrace and lift the proper way. You don't want to strain yourself, causing a hernia.
